Background of the study
Indigenous environmental conservation methods in Ijebu-Ode have been integral to preserving biodiversity for generations. These locally developed practices, rooted in traditional ecological knowledge, emphasize sustainable resource management and the intrinsic connection between community welfare and nature (Adebayo, 2023). In the face of rapid industrialization and urban expansion, these indigenous methods offer a counterbalance to conventional environmental management strategies that often overlook local contexts. Current research indicates that indigenous conservation practices—such as sacred groves, community-based resource management, and ritual prohibitions—play a critical role in mitigating biodiversity loss (Femi, 2024). Moreover, the cultural significance attached to natural resources fosters a sense of custodianship among local populations. However, modern challenges such as climate change and economic pressures threaten the continuity of these practices, necessitating an in-depth examination of their efficacy and adaptability. This study seeks to explore the interrelationship between indigenous conservation methods and biodiversity protection, while also considering their potential integration with modern conservation policies (Adisa, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Ijebu-Ode’s indigenous conservation practices are under threat from modern development pressures and environmental degradation. The diminishing adherence to traditional ecological knowledge, compounded by unsustainable industrial practices, has led to a decline in biodiversity. This study addresses the urgent need to evaluate the effectiveness of these indigenous methods in biodiversity protection and to identify the challenges impeding their implementation. It aims to highlight the conflict between modern development and traditional practices, thereby providing insights into sustainable integration strategies (Adebayo, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of indigenous conservation methods in biodiversity protection.

  2. To identify challenges faced by traditional environmental practices.

  3. To recommend strategies for integrating indigenous methods with modern conservation efforts.

Research questions

  1. How effective are indigenous conservation practices in protecting biodiversity?

  2. What challenges limit the application of traditional methods?

  3. What strategies can integrate indigenous and modern conservation approaches?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Indigenous conservation methods significantly contribute to biodiversity protection.

  2. Modern development pressures hinder the efficacy of these practices.

  3. Integrated conservation strategies can enhance environmental sustainability.

Significance of the study
This study is significant in that it provides an in-depth analysis of indigenous environmental conservation methods and their role in biodiversity protection. Its findings will guide policymakers and environmental practitioners in crafting strategies that respect traditional knowledge while addressing contemporary ecological challenges (Femi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to indigenous environmental conservation practices in Ijebu-Ode Local Government and does not cover broader conservation policies outside this region.

Definitions of terms

  1. Indigenous conservation: Local practices for managing natural resources sustainably.

  2. Biodiversity protection: Efforts aimed at preserving the variety of life forms.

  3. Traditional ecological knowledge: Culturally derived environmental insights and practices.
